Clogged drains are easy to notice. It could be standing water in the kitchen or bathroom sink, or even your shower. At first, a clogged drain may not seem like much of a problem, especially if a sink or shower is still draining – albeit slowly. That’s why many homeowners don’t make getting it fixed much of a priority. But this can be a big mistake! It’s a good idea to get your drains professionally cleaned around once every two years. In this post, we’ll take a look at what types of things can cause a clogged drain, and why it’s important to get them fixed!

URGENCY

As with any routine maintenance, most people put it off until they really need it. In the case of drains or sewage lines, you may have a back-up right before family arrives in town for the holidays! This is what you want to avoid. Prepare now to avoid awkward moments later.

REDUCE THE RISK

There are a handful of factors that make some homes more at risk of clogged drains than others. Eliminating or reducing these factors where you can will reduce the chances of serious clogging.

  • Age: Older homes with older plumbing systems are more likely to experience clogs. Not only have they collected more debris over the years, but newer pipe technology has made new systems more viable.
  • Rental: Renters, either in homes or apartments, are more likely to neglect drainage problems or allow things to go down the drain since they don’t have the same risk of financial losses as the owner.
  • Disposal: Many homes have garbage disposals, which is great, but you can’t put just anything down there. Put as much food as possible in the trash, not down the drain. Food and grease will turn to sludge and clog up your disposal and your pipes. Some of the things that you should not put down the drain include eggshells, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, potato peels, carrots, and a big no-no: celery.

WHEN TO CLEAN YOUR DRAINS

A quick fix on unclogging your drains is a pretty easy process. For example, in the shower, this can just mean removing the drain plate and pulling out a hairball. This is effective, but only a temporary fix. Here’s a good rule to remember for when you need professional drain cleaning. If you find that your drains are re-clogging every month… it’s definitely time.
