A slow-draining tub or shower can be a real headache. Hair, soap scum, even bath salts can cause the drain to stop up. At first, it might not seem like much, but a partially-clogged drain will get exponentially worse over time. That’s why it’s a good idea to get it fixed as quickly as possible.

SCIENCE PROJECT

I think I was about in the fourth grade when a science lesson showed what happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar. I believe the result was something along the lines of a paper mache volcano. They didn’t tell me in the fourth grade that someday I’d use that amazing chemical reaction to fix a clog in my bathtub.

Just measure out one cup of white vinegar and one cup of baking soda. If you plan to do some real scrubbing, add a pinch of salt. Make sure the tub is dry, then dump the baking soda/salt mixture down the drain. Now pour in the vinegar. You should immediately see bubbles coming up the pipe. While you’re letting it stand for about 10 minutes, go boil a pot of water. Then pour that hot water down the drain. Depending on the scope of what’s causing the problem, that should do the trick.

SNAKE EYES

If the science project doesn’t work, you’ll need to step up your game. You can purchase a plumbing snake at most hardware stores. The snake is a long piece of metal that can be inserted into your drain. You can even use a crank to push the snake deeper into the drain. A hook on the end will help pull out any additional gunk that could be causing your problem. Caution – it’s not going to smell very nice!
