There are many types of pipes that service your home, and many options for the material those pipes are made of. There are sewer pipes, gas pipes, and water pipes made from PVC, plastic, cast iron, copper, clay, and more. Do you know which kind you have? How to take care of them? How long they should last? Does any of that matter? This post will begin a series in which we discuss a variety of types of pipes, their function, and other important factors to consider. We will start this series by discussing cast iron pipes.

KNOW YOUR PIPES

If you’re not sure what types of pipes are in and underneath your home, you’re not alone. The good news is that it’s easy to find out. Information about the makeup of your pipes should be included in your inspection report from when you purchased your home.

Cast iron pipes are common for receiving city water. Cast iron can be extremely durable, and can last more than 100 years if properly maintained, and depending on the quality of water they distribute. These pipes can be varying widths, enabling them to support a significant level of water pressure. In many cases, the cast iron pipes are coated with a bituminous compound which helps prevent rust and helps them last even longer. Even the joints in the pipes are tight and secure. Because of the heavy-duty nature of cast iron pipes, any repairs would need professional attention. These pipes are relatively inexpensive, especially considering their durability.
